A fascination with fungi and their life cycles is a key inspiration for a new composition by Mika Cornelius.

Universal Veil is a co-commission with SOUNZ, the Tarling Trust and the New Zealand String Quartet, and will be premiered by the quartet as part of its North Island tour, with performances from 11-21 September in Tauranga, Coromandel, Waiheke Island, Paeroa and Auckland.
Cornelius says the title of the work is both a reference to the membrane that encases some mushrooms as they grow, and a metaphor for the webs of relationships we form with each other.
RNZ Concert's David Morriss caught up with the composer and sound designer to talk about Universal Veil, as well as their sound design and music for video games.
