A law has come into force in Wallis and Futuna making it compulsory for motorbike and moped users to wear a helmet.

Anyone caught without a helmet will be fined $US50.

The law was to apply from last July but motorbike riders largely ignored it.

Therefore police decided to waived the fine if anyone caught without a helmet bought one and presented a proof of purchase within one week.

There had been a number of fatalities and head injuries in motorbike accidents.
