A second Fijian Deputy Prime Minister has been charged with corruption-related offences in as many weeks and is expected to resign from Cabinet today, local media are reporting.
Biman Prasad, who is also in charge of government finances, has reportedly informed Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka of his intention to step down on Tuesday after being charged by the country's anti-corruption office.
The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has not released any details on the charges, but state broadcaster FBC is reporting that Prasad was charged with allegedly failing to declare his directorship in hotel ventures as required under the Political Parties Act.
"Rabuka has confirmed the development, saying Prasad has verbally informed him of his intention to step down," according to FBC's report.
Prasad had also indicated that he would not attend today's Cabinet meeting, the broadcaster reported. He is set to appear at Suva Magistrates Court on 17 November, fijivillage.com reports.
Prasad was one of three deputy prime ministers in Rabuka's coalition government.

Last week, Manoa Kamikamica also resigned from the Cabinet after being charged with perjury and giving false information to a public servant. Kamikamica has been released on bail with a FJ$10,000 bond.
Kamikamica is the deputy leader of Rabuka's ruling People's Alliance Party, while Prasad is the leader of the National Federation Party.
