Police arrested a man wanted in Waikato after stopping a vehicle flagged a stolen in Auckland on Sunday.

Waikato Police said the man wanted by them was thought to be in Tokoroa but had contacts across Waikato, Bay of Plenty and Auckland.

In a statement, police said they were alerted by traffic cameras to a vehicle they said was stolen, travelling on State Highway 20 across South Auckland at 9.35am.

"The driver was signalled to stop but initially refused to do so. Eventually the driver did stop on a street in New Lynn, and was arrested."

Meanwhile, the passenger got into the driver's seat and drove off, police claimed.

"The Police Eagle helicopter, which was overhead, tracked the vehicle a short distance before the second driver abandoned the vehicle on a side street."

He was also arrested.

The first man, a 27-year-old, is due in Auckland District Court on Monday on a charge of unlawfully taking a motor vehicle, as well as breaching his conditions.

The second man, aged 22, is also due in Auckland District Court tomorrow on driving-related charges.
