A woman charged after the body of a baby was found in Auckland has been excused from appearing in court.

The 32-year-old woman is charged with interfering with human remains.

Police have been investigating since officers located the body of a newborn baby in a wheelie bin outside an address on Renall Street, Freemans Bay.

Detective Inspector Scott Beard, of Auckland City CIB, said a post-mortem examination was completed on Wednesday and results were still pending.

Cordons around Renall Street have since been stood down, and police were still carrying out enquiries at a specific property on the street.

The woman was unable to appear in court on Thursday due to health issues.

She was now due to appear on 31 July and enter a plea. Until then she has been voluntarily remanded in custody, and given interim name suppression.

Earlier, Beard had said the scheduled appearance on Thursday was expected to be via audio-visual link."We are conscious that this is a very delicate situation, and we are ensuring there is support in place for the woman," he said.

"Our enquiries remain ongoing and it will take some time for a thorough investigation to be completed."

They were continuing to ask for anyone with information or CCTV footage that could help the investigation to get in touch.
