Fire and Emergency is investigating the cause of a fire at a commercial building on a major arterial road in Auckland.

Most of Dominion Road near the Woolworths supermarket in the suburb of Mount Eden has been blocked off on Thursday. Traffic was being diverted onto Onslow Road.

Fire and Emergency shift manager Paul Radden said the fire was extinguished after two hours.

A fire investigator remained at the scene.

Radden said the fire was contained to the basement of a three-storey building.

Fire and Emergency senior station officer Phil Grace told RNZ when their crews first arrived at the scene there was a lot of smoke coming out of the ground level of the building.

Alan from the Salvation Army Family Store on Dominion Road said workers noticed the fire at a neighbouring building after 1:40pm.

"There's been thick, black, bellowing smoke coming out of the front door. ... We've had to close our store."

He said the affected building was previously used by Gumboot Friday and was set to be demolished.
