A driver who refused to stop for police led officers straight to three wanted men, a gun and a cache of ammunition.

Senior Sergeant Rene Rakete says officers spotted a stolen car on Whangārei's Otaika Road on Tuesday and signalled the driver to stop.

"When officers attempted to stop this vehicle it accelerated away at speed, turning down a side street in an attempt to evade police," Rakete said.

Police found the car at a property on Lichfield Place, where they also located three people of interest, shotgun rounds, and a gun.

A 45-year-old man has been charged with failing to stop and unlawfully possessing a firearm.

He appeared in the Whangārei District Court and was custody.

His next court date is set for 29 September.
