Bluebridge has cancelled two Cook Strait sailings due to a mechanical fault on one of its ships.
Engineers were working to repair the problem on the Connemara, which was discovered on Sunday night as it berthed in Picton.
StraitNZ spokesperson Will Dady said tugboats towed the vessel temporarily off its berth during repairs to allow another ship, the Livia, to dock.
"We are working to get the ship up and running again as soon as possible and apologise to our customers for the inconvenience," he said.
Two scheduled sailings on Monday had been cancelled, Dady said.
The Connemara lost power during a sailing last September due to contaminated fuel, leaving it drifting for more than two hours and needing a rescue from tug boats.
