A 25-year-old man charged with murder will remain behind bars after a man's body was found in North Dunedin last week.

The 36-year-old man was found dead in a Great King Street property after a sudden death was reported to police about 2pm on Friday.

Police said the pair were believed to have been known to each other.

The accused appeared in the Dunedin District Court on Monday afternoon.

He was granted interim name suppression and was remanded in custody without plea to appear in the High Court later this month.

Court documents suggest the deceased was stabbed.

On Saturday, Detective Inspector Shona Low said a homicide investigation was underway and the initial indications suggested he died from non-accidental injuries.

"Formal identification procedures will be carried out in the coming days as well as a forensic postmortem," she said.
