Two outgoing flights from New Plymouth have been cancelled due to fog.

Flightradar24 showed two Air New Zealand flights bound for New Plymouth being diverted mid air.

While flight NZ5043 from Auckland has been rerouted back to Auckland, the Christchurch to New Plymouth flight NZ5768 will now land in Palmerston North.

The affected departures are NZ5765 to Christchurch and NZ5038 to Auckland.

New Plymouth Airport Chief Executive David Scott said it hasn't been great weather for flying.

"We've had a few days this month unfortunately where we've had fog," Scott said.

"Bit of a disruptive spring for sure, it's the time of the year where this does happen , but it certainly has been a bit more common than we're used to."

He is hoping for a bit of wind to ease the fog for Monday's remaining flights.

"The tricky thing is you never know because it's always going to clear, so you certainly want to make sure people are pretty well informed because it can clear in a heartbeat and everything is back running normally."

A family, who wish to remain anonymous, have been affected twice by Friday and Monday's cancellations.

They said they're "just trying to get back to work" but recognise that the weather has been "rubbish" for the past couple of weeks.

"It's really out of anyone's control, it's a little bit frustrating but it's weather."

They said the rental car businesses at the New Plymouth airport were particularly busy following the cancellations.

The locally-owned New Plymouth Airport Rentals spokesperson said that they have received many phone calls regarding one-way travel but it does not provide that service.

They said other companies such as Avis, Budget, Ezi Rental Cars, and Hertz would be the next best bet for one-way travel.

Air New Zealand have confirmed that they are not seeing any other weather related disruptions outside of New Plymouth.
