Canterbury police say arrests are likely after fires were lit despite a total fire ban being in place.

The total ban on outdoor fires and fireworks kicked in on Wednesday due to the extreme fire risk caused by forecast severe gales.

It extends to Monday and covers Marlborough, Canterbury and South Canterbury.

Canterbury District Commander Superintendent Tony Hill said police are investigating reported fires since the ban was put in place, and police may prosecute those responsible.

"The fire ban is in place to reduce the risk of wildfires, which can be fanned further and bigger with significant windy conditions forecasted for several days," he said.

"The fire ban also includes fireworks, and police advise people to avoid lighting any fires or using gas cookers outside."

Fire and Emergency Assistant Commander Ken Cooper said drum fires and burnoffs are still being lit. While weather warnings have ended, the slightest spark in these conditions can see fire spreading quickly.

"If you see unlawful behaviour, including fires being lit when they shouldn't, call 111 immediately," Hill says.

Meanwhile, firefighters remain at the scene of a large fire near Hanmer Springs, with further staff due to join efforts to extinguish the fire on Friday morning.

Crews are also at the scene several fires in Kaikoura, where they are still dampening down hotspots.

The large scrub fire near Porangahau in central Hawke's Bay is also still burning, with fire crews likely to remain on site there until next week.
