New Zealand openers Tom Latham and Jeet Raval steered the home side to 42 without loss against some testing bowling.
Earlier, England declared on 352 for 9, setting the Black Caps a daunting chase of 382 runs to win and take the series 2-nil.
Soon after lunch Colin de Grandhomme did the damage, taking the wickets of Ben Stokes and Stuart Broad, before knocking Mark Wood over for 9.
Neil Wagner then took the wicket of Jonny Bairstow for 36 at which point captain Joe Root signalled the declaration.
Having started the day on 202 for 3, it wasn't until shortly before lunch that the Black Caps made their first break through.
First to go was Dawid Malan, out for 53, before captain Joe Root went for 54 soon after.
