Denmark's Jonas Vingegaard has retained the lead in the Vuelta a Espana despite the loss of the team's bikes before the start of stage three.

Frenchman David Gaudu of team Groupama-FDJ won the stage with Vingegaard third.

Vingegaard's podium came after his team Visma-Lease a Bike said that their mechanics' truck was broken into the previous night and several bikes were stolen.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident, the team added.

Reports have said 18 bikes with a value of half a million dollars were stolen.

Team mechanics managed to get enough bikes together for the stage.

Nelson's Finn Fisher Black finished 12th on the stage and is 32nd overall.

George Bennett is 76th and Dion Smith 160th.

Tuesday's stage, a 206.7km medium mountain route from Susa to Voiron, is the last of four stages in Italy before the Vuelta heads to Spain.
