New Zealand golfer Steve Alker has finished tied for third at the latest US PGA Champions Tour event in California.

Alker started the third and final round of the Pure Insurance Championship at Pebble Beach in a tie for the lead with Canadian Mike Weir.

However the 54-year-old Kiwi failed to keep up with the strong finishers in the closer holes with American Doug Barron coming through for the victory.

Barron fired a final round six under par 66, while Alker finished with a even par 72.

Alker was seeking his 10th victory on the over-50 tour and his second of the season.

The result will keep Alker in third place in the Charles Schwab Cup standings for the season.

He pockets NZ$270,700 for his finish today to take his season earnings to just under NZ$4 million.

There are another four tournaments before the season ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship.
