  • An off-duty police officer who was working as a security detail in the Manhattan building was killed after being shot in the back, sources told CNN.
  • Three other people are also dead, including the gunman.
  • Hundreds of law enforcement officers responded to the scene within minutes, according to a CNN team in the field.
  • The shooter has been tentatively identified as a 27-year-old from Las Vegas who had an expired private investigator license, sources told CNN.
  • The shooting took place at a skyscraper in a crowded part of Midtown Manhattan, just blocks from Grand Central Station and the Museum of Modern Art.

A gunman, a police officer and two other people are believed to be dead after shooting near a corporate office building in midtown Manhattan in New York, multiple law enforcement sources say.

The shooter, tentatively identified as a 27-year-old from Las Vegas, died from what police believe is a self-inflicted injury.

He had an expired private investigator license and had a concealed carry license for a handgun, sources told CNN.

The scene is "contained" and the "lone shooter has been neutralised," NYPD commissioner Jessica Tisch said on X.

A man with a long rifle was seen walking into the building, according to one source.

The suspected shooter exchanged fire with a New York Police Department officer in the lobby of 345 Park Avenue, a skyscraper home to the headquarters of Blackstone and the National Football League, a law enforcement official told CNN.

A NYPD officer was killed, a law enforcement official told CNN. A source previously said the officer was undergoing surgery.

Two other people were also killed.

A bomb squad was also at the scene.

The FBI was responding to "provide support" at the "active crime scene", according to an X post from Deputy Director Dan Bongino.

What we know about the shooter

The suspect in the deadly shooting in Midtown Manhattan was a 27-year-old who lived in Las Vegas, Nevada, law enforcement officials told CNN.

He had no significant criminal background, officials told CNN.

The suspected gunman was born in Hawaii but later moved to Las Vegas. He had a concealed carry permit for a handgun as well as an expired private investigator license in Nevada, officials told CNN.

In his youth, he was a competitive football player, sources told CNN.

The suspect was found dead in a stairwell in the building from what is believed to be a self-inflicted injury, according to sources.

Police have not publicly identified the suspect, who they say was the "lone suspect" in the shooting. Law enforcement backtracked the suspect to his car, which video shows him exiting alone, sources told CNN.

Reactions

New York City Mayor Eric Adams confirmed "there is an active shooter investigation taking place in Midtown right now" in a post on X.

"Please take proper safety precautions if you are in vicinity and do not go outside if you are near Park Avenue and East 51st Street," he wrote.

Governor Kathy Hochul said in a post on X she had been briefed on the shooting and urged people to avoid the area.

Video shows heavy law enforcement presence around the building and officers running inside.

The police department told CNN the scene was still "very active."

The 634-foot skyscraper, located at 345 Park Avenue, includes corporate offices for the National Football League and Blackstone. The building occupies an entire city block and is one of 41 New York City buildings with its own zip code.
