Why is there debate about making English an official language?

From Afternoons, 1:40 pm on 11 March 2026

There's been plenty of commentary around a Bill that's before Parliament which seeks to make English an official language of New Zealand.

It's part of a coalition deal with National and New Zealand First, putting English alongside Māori and Sign Language.

Labour and the Greens believe this bill is a waste of time, National backs it but says it isn't a top priority, but Winston Peters is defending the bill, saying it is a step towards common sense,

That got us thinking about "official" languages and how they get such status, for more on this Dr Andreea Calude joins Jesse.

She is the Associate Professor in Linguistics at Waikato University and has written a piece on the topic with her colleagues for The Conversation.
