Police Minister Mark Mitchell is in hospital with a chest infection.

Mitchell was admitted to Wellington hospital on Monday evening with fever and flu-like symptoms, and is receiving antibiotics.

He has battled a chest infection for months, with lung problems stemming back to an incident as a police officer in the 1990s, when he inhaled toxic fumes tracking an arsonist into a burning house.

A spokesperson for his office said he was recovering and expected to leave hospital within the next couple of days.

With no official acting police minister, associate ministers are on standby in the role, while Mitchell is away, the spokesperson said.
