Now the MetService long range forecast for all New Zealand to midnight Friday

The Situation

A front associated with a low over the Tasman Sea approaches the South Island today and crosses the country early tomorrow followed by a weak ridge over the South Island. Meanwhile, a second low over the north Tasman Sea approaches the North Island tomorrow, preceded by a moist northerly air flow with a number of associated fronts.

Looking at the weather to midnight tomorrow

Northland, Auckland, Coromandel and Bay of Plenty

Partly cloudy. Showers developing early tomorrow, possible thunderstorms about Northland.

Waikato to Taranaki, also the central high country

Partly cloudy. Showers developing tomorrow afternoon, thunderstorms possible inland.

Whanganui to Wellington, also Nelson and Marlborough

Partly cloudy. Isolated showers tomorrow morning.

Gisborne to Wairarapa

Mainly fine. A few showers from tomorrow afternoon, thunderstorms possible in southern Hawke's Bay and the Tararua District until evening.

Buller, Grey and Westland

Cloudy periods with isolated showers, turning to rain tonight with thunderstorms possible, easing to isolated showers tomorrow morning, clearing afternoon.

Canterbury, Otago and Clutha

Partly cloudy. Scattered showers, then rain for a time tomorrow morning.

Fiordland and Southland, excluding Clutha

Mostly cloudy with scattered showers, clearing to fine about Fiordland tomorrow morning.

Chatham Islands

Partly cloudy. A few showers tomorrow morning.

And the outlook for the following three days...

Wednesday

North Island: Periods of rain or showers, possibly heavy. South Island: Rain in the north and east, possibly heavy in Marlborough. Showers elsewhere. However, mostly fine about Westland and Fiordland.

Thursday

North Island: Rain in the south and scattered showers elsewhere, clearing late. South Island: Rain in Canterbury and Marlborough clearing. A few showers later for Fiordland, otherwise mainly fine.

Friday

North Island: Isolated showers in the west, otherwise fine. South Island: Showers about Southland and Fiordland turning to rain and spreading to Westland later with scattered falls reaching Otago. Mainly fine elsewhere.

And at the Chathams

Rain developing on Wednesday, turning to showers on Thursday, gradually easing Friday. Strong northeasterlies developing Wednesday then easing early Thursday. Gale southwesterlies developing later Thursday, easing during Friday.
